Driving ability can change gradually due to vision, hearing, mobility, reaction time, medical conditions, or medications. The goal is not simply to stop driving; it is to recognize changes early and make safe, realistic decisions.

Consider speaking with a health care provider or family member if you experience:

  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Confusion at familiar intersections
  • New dents or scrapes on the vehicle
  • Frequent close calls
  • Difficulty turning to check blind spots
  • Trouble staying within a lane
  • Increasing anxiety while driving
  • Concern expressed by passengers, family members, or others

Helpful resources include:

Local Transportation Assistance

The Moore County Department of Aging offers medical transportation to qualifying Moore County residents age 60 and older. Transportation may also be available for congregate meal participants and, in limited circumstances, for existing medical-transportation clients who need trips to locations such as pharmacies or grocery stores.

Advance registration and scheduling requirements apply. Review Moore County Transportation Services or call 910-947-4185.

Pedestrian, Bicycle and Golf Cart Safety

Whether walking, cycling, or using a golf cart:

  • Use sidewalks and designated paths when available.
  • Cross at marked crossings whenever possible.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before entering the roadway.
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing in low-light conditions.
  • Avoid distractions from phones or headphones.
  • Use lights or reflective equipment after dark.
  • Assume that a driver may not see you.
  • Slow down near intersections, driveways, parking areas, and shared paths.
  • Follow all traffic laws and posted signs.

Report damaged sidewalks, obstructed signs, streetlight concerns, vegetation blocking visibility, or other non-emergency public hazards through MY VOP.

For an immediate roadway danger, contact the Village or emergency services rather than submitting an online request.
