The Village of Pinehurst Beautification Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s Warren H. Manning Award.  The award honors one of America’s preeminent landscape architects and the landscape heritage he created for Pinehurst.  It recognizes exceptional landscapes in Pinehurst neighborhoods and commercial areas that enhance the Village using native and non-native plantings, water conservation practices and design principles that provide a communal benefit to the Village – Manning’s vision.

The properties receiving this year’s Warren H. Manning Award epitomize Manning’s vision of landscapes that fit into the natural surroundings.

Built in 1909, Ailsa House, at 60 Carolina Vista is surrounded by mature Canadian hemlocks and Southern magnolias creating a secluded, enclosed garden. This natural setting includes mature evergreens such as cryptomeria and rhododendron.  Peek past the original lantern kiosks and the white picket fence bordered by lush English ivy to view stunning native saucer magnolias in bloom.  The property is best viewed from the Magnolia Road side.

Built in the 1940s and thoughtfully renovated in 2012, Everette Cottage at 180 Everette Road is framed by a majestic Chinese fir and mature Southern magnolias that form a canopy over plantings of camelias at the entrance to a quaint garden.  Raised beds feature pittosporum that soften the brick surround.  Crape myrtles are planted strategically among azaleas, camellias and jasmine on a trellis that compliments the front landscape.  Annuals add a seasonal touch of color.

Sally House at 87 Short Road was built in 1927.  A tidy, trimmed hedge of Japanese cleyera defines the property and frames lush green grass.  Beyond the cleyera hedge, the property has an inviting area for wildlife along with a fenced-in area for guests to sit and visit.  This tranquil setting is beneath a canopy of mature American hollies and plantings of hydrangea, boxwood and loropetalum.

About the Award

Recipients of the award receive a Warren H. Manning Certificate of Achievement from the mayor, signage at their property recognizing the honor, and a special gift selected by the Beautification Committee.
