pedestriansinvillageMany of our residents take advantage of our environment and walk or jog throughout the Village especially in the morning and evenings. However, North Carolina General Statute 20-174 (d) states that “Where sidewalks are provided, it shall be unlawful for any pedestrian to walk along and upon an adjacent roadway. Where sidewalks are not provided, any pedestrian walking along and upon a highway shall, when practicable, walk only on the extreme left of the roadway or its shoulder facing traffic which may approach form the opposite direction. Such pedestrian shall yield the right-of-way to approaching traffic.”

The police department would appreciate all of our walkers and joggers to use the sidewalks and or greenways where they are provided. If you have to walk or jog on the roadways all ways do it facing oncoming traffic, use the shoulder of the road or the extreme edge of the roadway when no shoulder is available.

When traffic approaches you, please move out of the roadway until the traffic has passed. It is highly recommended that you wear bright clothing with a reflective vest or belt and carry a small flashlight in the early morning or late evening. With this in mind the police department wishes everyone a safe and an enjoyable walk or run throughout the Village.
