The Conservation Commission was formed in 2003 as part of the Village’s Comprehensive Long-Range Plan to meet the conservation goals of Pinehurst. Since the Conservation Commission was established, it has become a large entity with six committees and many members. The Conservation Commission is currently chaired by Lorraine Tweed, a former member of Village Council. Over the past several years, the Conservation Commission has performed a number of activities including: educational workshops, Arbor Day, and promoting conservation by participating in community events. The subcommittees identify plants along the greenway and promote recycling, tree planting, water conservation and open space preservation. The Conservation Commission typically meets the second Monday of every other month, beginning in January, in the Council Conference room of the Village Hall at 395 Magnolia Road, Pinehurst, North Carolina. There are several farmers' markets in the area, including the newest site in Pinehurst's village center in the sand parking lot on Village Green Road West, across from the Theatre Building. For 2012, the market is on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 AM - 1 PM. The Sandhills Farmers' Green Market is the non-profit organization that all of the vendors at this site are members. The market features local fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, baked goods, plants, and crafts. Come support our local farmers!
Eat Local! Sandhills Farm to Table is a way to conveniently get fresh, healthy foods. It is a co-operative between the growers and consumers. This program utilizes local family farms and helps guarantee purchases from them that in the long term will help preserve farmland.
