History, Charm and Southern Hospitality
The Recycling & Hazardous Waste Disposal Committee works with the Public Services Department to inform and motivate residents on the concepts and practices of recycling. The Committee also helps promote programs to collect hazardous waste materials, such as old paints, garden chemicals and batteries that should not be put into landfills.
The Committee's mission is to “Inform and Motivate”. Information is provided through printed media using the Village Newsletter, organization newsletters, the Village web site, and brochures. Committee members are available to make presentations to groups such as homeowners, social groups, garden clubs, civic groups and schools. The Committee motivates residents to recycle and dispose of hazardous waste appropriately by presenting information about the environmental impact and preservation of natural resources aspect of recycling.
The Committee has established a goal for increasing recycling in Pinehurst by 5% over the next year. At the current level of participation, this means an increase of 21 pounds per year of recycled material per household, or two full garbage bags.
